Written and Directed by Tony Briggs
This funny, heart-warming tale, inspired by the life of writerTony Briggs’ mother,is one of Australia’s best-loved stories, winningmultiple awards as a play, film and soundtrack album. It tells of the incredible journey of fourYorta Yorta Women, who sing Motown hits against the backdrop of personal changeand massive social upheaval taking place in Australia in the late 60s.
These four young Aboriginal women from regional Australia, who like to sing country music, suddenly get the chance to change their tune, their clothes and their lives. Wearing uniforms of sequins and armed only with microphones they find themselves trying to spread joy in the hell that is the Vietnam War.
Writer Tony Briggs will direct his work in a version he promises will be the most intimate telling of The Sapphires story yet, bringing the raw energy, fun and emotion of this story directly to the stage, a story affirming life and the realisation of dreams.
“The Sapphires is as close as anything I’ve see to a sure-fire hit. This is great popular theatre, which is confident enough to take no prisoners.” Alison Crogan, Theatre Notes
