Hayao Miyazaki | Japan | 1989
On the night of a full moon, thirteen-year-old Kiki decides it’s time to leave home, as tradition dictates, and learn how to make her own way in the world as a witch. With Jiji tucked up behind her, she jumps on her broomstick and takes to the skies.
Spying a beautiful town nestled by the ocean, Kiki chooses it as their new home, but once they descend, she and Jiji face many challenges, from how to land a broom in busy traffic, to how to make friends in a city full of strangers. Together they start to figure it out, but has Kiki bitten off more than she can chew when she sets up a flying delivery service?
Written and directed by legendary Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, Kiki’s Delivery Service is an original coming-of-age story, in which gloriously animated flight scenes illustrate both the unmoored feeling of leaving childhood and the exhilaration that comes from learning how to stretch your wings.
This English language version of the film features the voices of Kirsten Dunst, Janeane Garofalo and Phil Hartman as Jiji the cat.
