“A sleek, exhilarating documentary about an all-woman crew who broke boundaries and made history by competing in a gruelling around-the-world yachting race” – The NY Times
Skipper Tracy Edwards made history in 1989 when her boat ‘Maiden’ crossed the start line of this notoriously gruelling race. A former ship’s cook, Edwards decided the only way to break into this all-boys club was to take up the challenge with an all-women team. She set about recruiting a crew and raising the money to refurbish and equip a beat-up old boat. Overcoming many setbacks, including resistant sponsors, and with chauvinistic reporters betting on their failure, ‘Maiden’ – with Edwards at the helm – finally set out on the 33,000-mile voyage.
The difficulty of their undertaking is vividly demonstrated in footage shot by sports networks as well as the crew themselves. Their triumphs are equally palpable, and make this documentary exciting, fast-paced and totally engrossing.
